Eric Klar, a Big Law finance attorney who switched careers to investment banking, rose to the level of managing director and recently returned to the practice of law, talks about the paths of investment banking careers.

I’m glad he mentioned the important fact that when you’re making a career change from law to investment banking, your prior experience is considered added value. Too often, lawyers fear making a career change and transitioning from law to an alternative career because they think they would be throwing away all of their hard work from law school and law practice.
More often than not, the prior experience and skills from law school and law practice pay off. That may not be true on day 1 or when it comes to breaking into the new path, but the odds are that it will be an asset over time.
