Number 3 – Chief Information Officer

Number three on the list is going to be executives in general, but specifically we want to highlight the Chief Information Officer or CIO.

The CIO is one of the highest technology jobs positions that you can get into.  Depending on the company you work for, you can make a very generous amount of money in this position.  This is an executive position, residing in the senior level management ranks of a company.

As the Chief Information Officer you are going to oversee the organization’s entire information technology infrastructure. You have to have a very good understanding of the business side of things as well as the information technology being used to drive the business.  This position is sometimes confused with Chief Technology Officer (CTO) jobs.  In some companies they may be one in the same, just a peference for title.  Most often the CTO is considered slightly below the CIO.   The biggest distinction being the business side of the the job.

The CIO has to really understand how the business works and how it makes a profit.  Whereas the CTO may only be concerned with the overall operations of the entire technology department. You can see that there is some significant overlap of the two titles.  Just keep in mind that to be a CIO in a well established company, you will need to bring some proven business acumen to the table.

Depending on the size of the company, as Chief Information Officer,  on average you can expect to make about $161,000 a year.  At very large firms you can see CIO’s making well over $500,000 a year.

Number 2 – Sales Or Marketing VP

The next best paid jobs in tech is another high level position and that is Marketing or Sales Vice President.  This might surprise you as being on a list of the best paid jobs in tech.  However, the old saying “nothing happens until somebody sells something” is as true for tech companies as it is for ANY company!

In order to have a successful technology company you have to have customers that buy your products.  So how do customers buy your products? They either buy it through your company’s marketing program (digital or otherwise) or a sales person proactively makes a connection to them.  And they need a real pro to manage and drive the process.

At the end of the day all of these other positions are great and very much needed.  You have to build infrastructure, you have to make sure everything is maintained, and you have to make sure everything is safe.  If you want to have a successful company, you have to have people buying your products or services.  That is only going to happen through the efforts of sales or marketing.

One of the highest. best paid jobs in tech that you can get is a Marketing or Sales Vice President position.   These VPs, on average in the US make about $184,000 a year, but it really does depend on the company that you work for. It is not uncommon for some Marketing or Sales Vice Presidents to make in the millions!

Number 1 – Chief Executive Officer

That brings us to our number one on the list.  It is probably no surprise that the best paid job in tech is Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company!

In the technology industry today, CEOs typically make about $241,000 a year on average.  That does not include many of the bonuses and stock incentives CEOs receive when they reach important business goals and milestones.

You will also see a lot of outliers that make much, much more than this.   For instance, Chad Richardson is the CEO of Pacom and he made $211 million last year. Elon Musk is the CEO of tesla and he made over six billion dollars! If you take into account stock options and how much equity they have in their company, many CEOs make even more than that!

Being a CEO in the tech industry likely has the most opportunity out of just about any industry out there.  It can be quite lucrative.  Some people become CEOs by starting their own company.  That’s probably the most common way it happens.  Still, others will actually work their way up into a company and then when the current CEO quits or retires, they can be in a position to move into their place.
